Unsupervised Children At Greatest Risk After School

by Lauren

In our little local free paper, I saw an article that said that more than 14.3 million children in the U.S. are unsupervised between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day- when kids are at greatest risk to get involved in gangs, drugs, crime and other destructive behaviors. This is according to research by the Afterschool Alliance and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. The article goes on to say that high-quality afterschool programs can counter many of these problems, which I don’t doubt.

I can’t tell you how often parents of older children have told me they often need you at home MORE during their pre-teen and teen years than when they’re little. For my current first-grader, I put him on the bus in the morning and take him off in the afternoon. I expect this will continue until my kids graduate high school (although I won’t actually stand with them at the bus stop).

How many parents today are unhappy in their jobs and wonder what their teenagers are doing while they’re stuck in their office at 4:00. Being a VA is not right for everyone, but for many, it’s turns out to be the balanced life they’re looking for. Do you have what it takes? Read chapter 1 online here.
